Being organized entirely by student volunteers of the UBC Dance Club, the Gala Ball always has a very fun, exciting and youthful atmosphere about it… and this year was definitely no exception! Congratulations to all the executives of the Club and the volunteers of the Gala committee for putting on such a great event. This year, as you can see from the photo to the left, the executives brought back the purple UBC Dance Club jackets! Although slightly different in style, they definitely brought back memories for me, being on the executive board that introduced the original purple jackets, back in They are heavily worn, as we sported them at each of the local competitions we went to in the early days, as well as at the Intercollegiate Festival in Florida when we used to be on the Formation Team. Many of our local teachers, judges, competitors and dancers started out at the Club. For Joel and me, the Club will always hold a special place in our hearts, as it is where we met, started dating, fell in love with dance and with each other. What makes the UBC Gala Ball unique is definitely the amount of new dancers competing for the very first time.

General Presentation Definition Developmental pediatrics is a subspecialty in pediatrics concerned with the study and treatment of the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth of children from birth through adolescence. Why is it important? The concept of ongoing change and maturation is integral to the daily practice of pediatrics and encompasses all aspects of pediatric medicine. Being in a complex multicultural environment like Canada, what should we do to achieve gender equity in engineering? How should we support women pursuing their professional career? For example, in China, females in STEM in universities are considered unusual and are often the targets for mindless jokes for male students. It indicates the lack of awareness of micro-aggression and the respect for diversity, which also exist in the vast majority of the societies and are creating obstacles for people with the passion to achieve their goals.

Lucky enough, I had the opportunity to explore these topics with female professionals of colours from different disciplines as well as students of various genders and races from other universities. After the discussion, I have marked down the followings as some of the points I want to convey to all of the fellow female students of colours in engineering. This not only means speaking out when you encounter or witness unfair treatment because of gender and race, but also means setting an example for other people out there who are going through the same situation as yours.

Your courage and strength can empower a lot of people to stand up and do the things that have been told as impossible for them. Keep track of your efforts. This is especially important after you enter your career. Keeping organized lists of the tasks you performed and the outcomes throughout the years at work can provide you a good self-reference when facing unreasonable charges for something you did.

With precise time, place, and people involved, it would be much easier for you to clarify misunderstandings.

Ecological Responses to Climate Change in a Complex Ocean By jrhajiak on February 24, We have entered a period of rapid environmental change, and ecological responses to this change are beginning to outpace our ability to understand and predict them. Thursday, November 27, PCOH Societies with high levels of social and educational mobility are normally perceived as more socially just, more economically effective, and mobile societies share many attractive features, such as high trust, good public health, social security, etc. In Denmark and the other Nordic countries, inequality of educational opportunity is lower than in most other places.

Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to attain higher education here than in the UK or the US, for example. The Nordic exceptionalism is normally seen as the outcome of social democratic welfare regimes — universalistic welfare systems with high levels of redistribution and decommodification of welfare services, universal child care, high social security, free access to health and education, plus generous government grants for all higher education students.

At the same time, educational reproduction is still high in Denmark.

Was it in the library? While couples like to think their love story is special and unique, upon greater consideration, a thread of commonalities emerges amongst UBC relationships that makes this narrative less convincing. Day one of first-year orientation? Were you partners in a lab or part of an icebreaker at a club? This predictable start to the relationship is followed by a familiar set of challenges. Primarily, the scheduling conflict. Overwhelmed by the post-secondary workload and classes, you struggle find time to see each other.

Ultimately, you compromise with “the joint study session,” an opportunity to demonstrate both your dedication to each other and academic rigour. As things escalate, you engage in the walk to class along main mall. This becomes complicated when you belong to different faculties, but there is always “the sunset stroll along Wreck Beach” or “the meander in Nitobe Garden. Whether your love story spanned two weeks of first year, the duration of a term, cuffing season or ended after one of you decided to go on exchange, the stereotypical nature of your relationship will be the ties that bind you eternally to one another and all other couples at UBC.
