AP — Scientists are using information gleaned from both illegal ivory art and elephant dung to provide clues that could help save the lives of pachyderms that are being slaughtered for their tusks in Africa. The wildlife detective work involves cutting up seized artifacts including bangle bracelets and statues of Chinese deities and subjecting them to carbon dating to determine when the elephants were killed. DNA from the ivory art is then compared to a DNA database derived from elephant dung to pinpoint where they lived. The chips will be analyzed by scientists at Columbia University and the University of Washington. Previous work by the researchers has provided valuable information to focus poaching law enforcement in Africa and prosecute ivory traffickers elsewhere. Once numbered at more than a million, the population of African elephants fell 30 percent between and , to about , , according to the Great Elephant Census funded by wildlife organizations. The decline, at a rate of 8 percent per year, is attributed mainly to poaching for ivory. The sale of ivory across international boundaries has been banned since Last year, the U. Fish and Wildlife Service instituted a near-total ban on the domestic commercial ivory trade and barred sales across state lines.

Working from Forensic Laboratories in the UK, Europe and North America, we employ the finest scholars, forensic scientists and academics, all of whom are leading exponents in their respective fields.
Freemanart administer and undertake varied practical forensic investigations of fine art: Textile, canvas dating, regional manufacture and fibre analysis Signature and inscription verification and authentication, forensic handwriting analysis and label authentication procedures. Much as you would need to know if you were taking a legal case to court. So we always prefer to make a preliminary and vital professional pre authentication assessment for clients first.
June 9, istock The trope of the tortured creative genius has persisted since Plato proposed banning poetry —long enough to seem like more than mere coincidence. From the emotionally unstable writer to the suicidal actor to the artist who cuts off his own ear, history is riddled with examples that bring the myth to life. But is there any science linking creativity output to madness?
A new—and controversial— study concludes that indeed, creative genius and mental disorders are connected at a genetic level. The new research, published in Nature Neuroscience, comes from Dr. The team then replicated these results looking at data from large studies carried out in Sweden and the Netherlands. In these findings, the variants for mental disorders were nearly 25 percent more common in creative people.
Not so fast, some researchers are saying.

When artificial intelligence has been used to create works of art, a human artist has always exerted a significant element of control over the creative process. But what if a machine were programmed to create art on its own, with little to no human involvement? What if it were the primary creative force in the process? And if it were to create something novel, engaging and moving, who should get credit for this work? An emphasis on novelty When designing the algorithm, we adhered to a theory proposed by psychologist Colin Martindale.
He hypothesized that many artists will seek to make their works appealing by rejecting existing forms, subjects and styles that the public has become accustomed to. In other words, novelty reigns. On one end, it tries to learn the aesthetics of existing works of art. On the other, it will be penalized if, when creating a work of its own, it too closely emulates an established style.

A new study published in the upcoming issue of Psychological Science in the Public Interest is shedding light on the science – or lack thereof – behind online dating services. The psychological scientists who wrote the report hope to indentify how online dating might be hurting singles. Co-written by Eli J. Finkel Northwestern University , Paul W. Reis University of Rochester , and Susan Sprecher Illinois State University , the report reviews over psychology studies and surveys.
So, what’s the problem? Scientists worry that dating sites claim to use exclusive “matching algorithms,” which may be nothing more than a guessing game. In fact, our report concludes that it is unlikely that their algorithms can work, even in principle, given the limitations of the sorts of matching procedures that these sites use.

Share on Messenger Close As a gay scientist, sometimes it’s just easier to say ‘I’m a teacher’. On one level the answer to this question is obvious: But in some less obvious ways they are almost entirely absent. With the anniversary of Alan Turing’s death last year the question was being asked afresh , but LGBT History Month is here and the situation has not improved. One explanation could be that the scientific environment has been a hostile one for LGBT people. The world was a very different place when I was starting my scientific career in the s.
Section 28 was on the statute books and LGBT discrimination in employment was commonplace and perfectly legal. Far fewer people were out at work, regardless of their profession, for fear that it could damage their career. In science you are constantly judged on the quality of your last research paper, in what is often an aggressively competitive environment. You might have an arm growing out of your forehead, but when you walk into a room of scientists, the first thing they ask is “what research do you do?
This is not scientists being unfriendly. It’s simply that your sexuality is not the most interesting piece of information about you, which I have always found liberating. I should say that I don’t think of myself as an out gay scientist; what I am is bloody obvious. For me, it has never been a question of whether to tell people that I am gay, but rather of whether I want to expend energy on pretending not to be.

View Issue Since the s, computers have had increasing roles in all aspects of human life—including an involvement in criminal acts. This development has led to the rise of digital forensics, the uncovering and examination of evidence located on all things electronic with digital storage, including computers, cell phones, and networks. High-tech crime fighting is now needed everywhere, as shown in this lab belonging to the West Virginia State Police Digital Forensics Unit.
Craig Cunningham Ad Right Compared with traditional forensic science, digital forensics poses significant challenges. Information on a computer system can be changed without a trace, the scale of data that must be analyzed is vast, and the variety of data types is enormous. Just as a traditional forensic investigator must be prepared to analyze any kind of smear or fragment, no matter the source, a digital investigator must be able to make sense of any data that might be found on any device anywhere on the planet—a very difficult proposition.
From its inception, digital forensics has served two different purposes, each with its own difficulties. First, in many cases computers contain evidence of a crime that took place in the physical world. The computer was all but incidental—except that computerization has made the evidence harder for investigators to analyze than paper records. The age of the computer helped perpetuate his crime, because few people on Wall Street have experience with year-old technology, and it created an added complication after Madoff was arrested, because investigators had few tools with which to make sense of his data.
Information on a computer system can be changed without a trace, the scale of data to be analyzed is vast, and the variety of data types is enormous. Twitter Today personal computers are so ubiquitous that the collection and use of digital evidence has become a common part of many criminal and civil investigations.

It has now been five years in and let me assure you that not much changes in the way of dating a tattoo artist. After five years together we still erupt in the same battles we had when we first started dating. Like any other couple, we fight about normal things. Money, jealousy, petty crap that should never have come to be an argument in the first place. The biggest that I have found after five years is not something you would expect. The main issue that I have with this man is the way he volunteers himself to be taken advantage of.

Long hours and many glasses of wine were consumed trying to develop the perfect strategy to court this new woman, and this most saccharine of holidays was proving to be an obstacle. Should I be assertive and make plans with her for the night? Should I assume the contrary? Would presents be involved? If so, of what sort? That is, how interested did I want to appear to this woman? The answer to this type of question has long been debated. Psychologists have had little to say on this matter for quite some time.

Then, one day on Instagram, I saw that she had been invited to the Open House for prospective graduate students at Scripps Institution of Oceanography the same school I was currently attending! Open house is an overwhelmingly exciting time in a graduate students life and I am happy to report, Tammy will be joining the PhD cohorts at SIO this year! What is your earliest memory of being hooked by science?
I grew up on a small farm and was always drawn to nature. I spent as much time as possible outside; catching lizards, climbing trees and watching the stars. I knew from a young age I wanted to work in science, whether that was with animals or up in space. I was really obsessed with frontiers, and for much of my childhood I thought I would be the first person on Mars. That desire to explore unknowns really cultivated a deep curiosity for the world and led to my interest in exploring the oceans and Antarctica.
I think that experience really solidified my motivation to pursue a scientific career.
