I was contacted by a G player in the States and a G player in Norway both using the first run, early “prerelease” version of the guitar electronics. The cards are labeled as version “A. You can also see jumper wires soldered across the board. The first time I tried to repair a failed op-amp in a G , I realized that the pin-out documentation was wrong on the schematic. The pin out information was correct on the G Service Manual Schematics schematic, which uses almost the same circuits. All the G s and G s that I have checked have op-amp pin outs consistent with the G These op-amps are the top three op-amps in line with the pin ribbon connector. This is consistent with the G schematic. The line-level amplifiers are surrounded by resistors for a simple gain circuit, and the hex fuzz amplifiers have the network of diodes used to create the fuzz sound. From looking at the version “A” photo, it appears the one op-amp is used per string to both amplify the signal and create the hex fuzz sound.

But, with more than 75 years of shipping records in the Gibson books, and dozens of variations on numerical schemes used over the years, serial numbers sometimes do little to shed light on the origin of a mysterious Gibson. With vintage Gibsons selling at auction for as much as half a million dollars, Davidson will sometimes roll up his sleeves and poke around in the ledgers, but only as time allows.
The earliest volumes contain hundreds of yellowed pages covered front and back with rows of handwritten numbers. It can take Davidson several hours to locate a specific serial number, if he can find it at all. Even then, there may be four other guitars—of all different models—with the same number sequence. Serial numbers can pull up multiple guitars from multiple years.

The unique feature of the Gibson ES T at the time of its market introduction was the reduced width of the frames. As a result, the guitar has a thinner body compared to instruments with a resonance body that is of full height. Design[ edit ] The letter T in the model name of the ES T stands for thinline and was given by Gibson at the same time as the three new models of hollow-bodies with narrow sides and flat bodies were introduced.
Gibson USA serial numbers are pretty straightforward. It’s the Custom Shop numbering that is so very weird. Both Nashville and Memphis have their own numbering systems and styles.
The ES was introduced in Gibson hired Ted McCarty in , who became President in He led an expansion of the guitar line with new guitars such as the “Les Paul” guitar introduced in and designed by Les Paul , a popular musician in the s and also a pioneer in music technology. Later, a shorter neck was added. Similar in size to the hollow-body Thinlines, the ES family had a solid center, giving the string tone a longer sustain.
In the s, Gibson also produced the Tune-o-matic bridge system and its version of the humbucking pickup, the PAF “Patent Applied For” , first released in and still sought after for its sound. These “modernistic” guitars did not sell initially. It was only in the late s and early 70s when the two guitars were reintroduced to the market that they sold well.
The Firebird , in the early 60s, was a reprise of the modernistic idea, though less extreme. Modernization[ edit ] In the late 50s, McCarty knew that Gibson was seen as a traditional company and began an effort to create more modern guitars. In the body design of the Les Paul was changed due to the demand for a double-cutaway body design. The Les Paul returned to the Gibson catalog in This began an era characterized by corporate mismanagement and decreasing product quality.
